One Step Away chronicles the incredible journey of SCAD alumni Sabrina Spanta and how she worked with SCAD's President and Founder, Paula Wallace, to coordinate her sisters escape from the Taliban in Afghanistan. Through Sabrina's story, we witness the transformative power of art and immeasurable hope of a future where women are safe from persecution.
Director Biography - Leslie Merlin
Leslie Merlin, a dedicated Assistant Director with the Directors Guild of America, has been a dynamic presence in the film industry since graduating from the Savannah College of Art and Design in 2004. Her extensive career spans a range of films, television shows, and commercials. Leslie’s notable credits include working on the Emmy Award-winning series Modern Family, for which she received a DGA Award nomination, as well as Oscar-nominated films like Tropic Thunder and The Kids Are All Right.
Currently, Leslie serves as a Producer of Branded Content for SCAD, where she has taken on diverse roles including directing, writing, and producing the acclaimed project One Step Away. Additionally, she contributes to the development of emerging talent through her involvement in running the PA Bootcamp. With a passion for elevating the craft and a commitment to excellence, Leslie continues to push the boundaries of creativity and professionalism in the industry she loves.
Director Statement
My Name is Leslie Merlin, I was the director, writer and producer for ONE STEP AWAY, the incredible story of Sabrina Spanta and her sisters leaving Afghanistan with the help of President and founder of Savannah College of Art and Design: Paula Wallace. I was able to engulf myself into Sabrina’s life and it opened my world’s knowledge and the importance of not just helping but protecting women against persecution.
